About Spain
Separated from the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees mountains, Spain reaches to the coast of North Africa and has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. During its long and rich history Spain was occupied by Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors who arrived from North Africa in the 8th century and were driven out in the 15th century. In 1975 Spain became a constitutional monarchy under Juan Carlos I. (The Spanish still enjoy their traditions.)

Day 2 (D) We arrive in Madrid, and are taken to our hotel.  Tonight we enjoy at a typical Tapas meal.
Gran Versalles Hotel

About Madrid
Madrid is Spain’s capital with over three million people residing there, and is the geographic and cultural center of Spain.  Madrid’s attractions include three internationally famous art galleries, royal palace, and many museums and monuments overflowing with Spanish history, including the famous Prado Museum containing the world’s greatest assembly of Spanish paintings.

About Tapas
Tapas are small snacks that are a Spanish tradition. Tapas began in 19th century Andalusia when bartenders gave occasional snacks with drinks, but now Tapas offers a wide range of appetizing varieties, from cold meats to elaborately prepared hot dishes of meats and seafood and vegetables.

Day 3 (B,D) We sightsee in Madrid. Gran Versalles Hotel

This morning we see Madrid’s main thoroughfares and monuments: the Alcala gate, the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de Espana and its statue of Cervantes and the Neptuno Fountains. We will also visit the famous Prado museum with more than 3,000 paintings, including rooms full of masterpieces by Velazquez, Goya, El Greco and Bosch.  It’s an overwhelming experience.

Our Madrid sightseeing ends in the early afternoon. You may want to visit more museums “along the Golden Art Triangle” or you might prefer shopping at some of the sophisticated boutiques of the Salamanca district.

Day 4 (B,D)??This morning we meet with Spanish nurses; this afternoon we visit the medieval city of Toledo. Gran Versalles Hotel

This morning we attend to our professional agenda and visit a local hospital and meet with Spanish nurses.

This afternoon we visit the medieval city of Toledo, former capital of Spain and artistic and spiritual center of Spain and home of El Greco.  Toledo is well preserved and the entire city is a Spanish monument.  We will meander through Toledo’s  narrow cobblestone streets.   Among the sights we will see are the Gothic Cathedral, the Synagogue and San Tome Church where we will view El Greco’s masterpiece, “The Buriel of the Count of Orgaz.”  Then we visit El Greco’s house and see more of his masterworks.

Day 5 (B,L) We travel to Seville, capital of Andalusia,  via the AVE?train.  This afternoon we have lunch and then tour Seville. Sevilla Center Hotel

About Andalusia and Seville
Andalusia is the region that extends across southern Spain; its landscape varies from the deserts of Almera in the east to the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada and the beaches of the Costa Del Sol.  Three cities there share the greatest of Spains Moorish monuments:?Grenada, Cordoba, and Seville.

Seville is the region’s spectacular capital.  A base for Columbus in the 15th century and gateway to the New World in the 16th century, Seville is a flamboyant and beautiful city where James Michener wrote,?“Sevilla doesn’t have ambience, it is ambience.”  It’s a city where bull fighting continues and castanets and flamenco dancers still fill the evenings.  Hemingway loved Seville's abundant nightlife.

Day 6 (B,D) This morning we meet with Spanish nurses at a local hospital. This afternoon is free for wandering and shopping.  Tonight we enjoy a “Flameno Show”  at a local restaurant.  Sevilla Center Hotel.

This morning we attend to our professional agenda and meet with Spanish nurses at a local hospital. This afternoon is free.

Seville is an attractive city where you can stroll around and take in the colorful and historic architecture and an occasional monument. Or, you might want to shop.  El Centro has an attractive cluster of pedestrianized shopping streets that sell everything from polk-a-dot flamenco dresses to diamond rings.  El Corte Ingles department store occupies four separate buildings on Plaza de la Magdalena.  Tonight we will dine out at a local restaurant and enjoy a Flemenco performance.

About The Flamenco
Flamenco is  Spain’s forceful artistic expression of the joys and sorrows of life.  Flamenco is a unique Andalusian art form originally performed by gypsies.  Dancers improvise from basic movements, following the rhythm of the guitar and their feelings.  Some performers mix traditional Flamenco music with Latin Jazz and American Blues.
