About Iceland
Iceland is an island nation situated between North America and Europe.  Composed of smoking volcanos, mountains, steaming lava fields, glaciers, icecaps, hot springs and gushing geysers, Iceland is a different and fascinating place to visit (the gateway in Jules Vern’s ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ is Iceland’s Mt Snaeffel).  Almost all of Iceland’s rocks are volcanic and their variety and and accessibility draws geoscientists from all over the World.  It has no pollution because people live mostly from fishing and all energy is either geothermal or hydroelectric.  Drinking water is pure and comes from glaciers.

Because it’s bathed in warm Gulf Stream waters and south-westerly winds, Iceland’s weather is milder than New York.  Long ago Icelanders named their country Iceland to discourage invaders.  Actually, the weather shifts and changes from rain to sunshine all day long.  (Icelanders named icy Greenland Greenland to encourage invaders to go there instead of Iceland).

With only 250,000 citizens, speaking Europe’s oldest language, it’s one of the most sparsely populated countries in the World and has no pollution because all of  its energy is geothermal.  Settled by Irish Monks and Norwegian Vikings between 870 and 930 AD, Iceland is the site of Europe’s first democratic parliamentary system.  Later, disunity led other Scandinavian countries to rule Iceland until June, 1944 when it became independent.

Day 2. (B,D) We arrive in Reykjavik  This afternoon we sightsee in Reykjavik  Tonight we have dinner at the hotel. Hotel Loftleidir

When we arrive, we will be taken to our hotel.  This afternoon we sightsee in Reykjavik, the world’s most northerly capital, among the sights we will see are Breidholt Hills, the Open Air Museum, Sveisson Sculpture Museum, Hallgrim’s Church, Hofdi House, venue of the Regan / Gorbachev Summit, midtown and the harbor.

About Reykjavik
Half the people in Iceland live in Reykjavik and everything that happens in Iceland happens there.  A small easy-to-get-around city, it’s where it was first settled in 874 by Norwejan Vikings (nearly everything in Reykjavik lies in walking distance of its old settlement)  One of the first things you’ll notice is the steam rising from the nearby geothermal fissures that provide Reykjavik’s energy (Reykjavik means ‘Smoky Bay’ because of the geothermal steam rising from its surroundings).  Because Reykjavik is heated by steam from geothermal springs it is probably the world’s most pollution free city.  Iceland’s only prison is there, and the last time we heard it held six prisoners.

Day 3.  (B,D)  We visit a hospital and meet with our Icelandic colleagues.  Then we travel south via the Icelandic countryside and glaciers to Hvergerdie and Kirkjubaejarklaustur, the site of an ancient convent. Hotel Kirkjubaejarklaustur

We attend to our professional agenda this morning and meet with Icelandic nurses at a local hospital.  Although Iceland is a small country its healthcare delivery system is advanced, particularly in geriatric healthcare.

Next we travel  to Hvergerdi,a thriving village and Iceland’s market-garden under a glass where geothermal energy heats 37 acres of greenhouses to grow fruits and vegetables.  Then we travel over the countryside through fertile farmlands and sand flats of Markarfljot River and over the Glacier Skogar and on to Reynishverfi or Dyrholaey to Kirkjubaejarklauste, a green oasis town in a volcanic desert formed by the eruption of the Laki craters in 1783. Kirkjubaejarklauste was originally settled by Irish Monks and the site of a convent until the reformation.

Day 4.  (B, L) We sightsee at Skaftafell National Park and take a boat trip among huge floating icebergs. Hotel Kirkjubaejarklaustur

From Kirkjubaejarklauster we travel to Skaftafell National park, Skaftafell is one of Iceland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty with its rugged mountains and three glaciers which are fingers of the ice cap Vatnajokull which was formed 2,500 years ago.  We see the spectacular scenery, then travel on to the Glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon where we take a boat trip among huge floating icebergs that create a surrealistic background in the deep waters of the lagoon.

Day 5.  (B,L) We travel through lava fields past the volcano Katla and see the great Skogafloss Waterfalls and nearby glaciers. Hotel Fludir

Today we travel through lava fields past the volcano Katla to the village of Skogar and visit the meticulously managed Folk Museum where we will learn how Iceland developed over centuries. Then we continue via the spectacular Skogafloss and Seljalandsfoss Waterfalls to Thorsmork Valley where the views of glaciers are more than spectacular.  Thorsmork Valley is surrounded by three glaciers, a string of mountains and two rivers.

Day 6.  (B,L) We see hot springs and geysers Thingvellir, the site of Europe’s first parliament.
Hotel Loftleidir

We visit the famous hot spring “Great Geyser” and Strokkur, a geyser sprouting every few minutes among hot springs and boiling pools.  On to Gullfoss (Golden Falls) one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls and Europe’s grandest waterfalls.

After we go to Thingvellir, the site of ancient parliament, and site of the geological divide that separates the continents of Europe and North America.

Day 7. (B,D)  This morning is free.  This Afternoon we visit the Blue Lagoon for a swim, later we rollick at an authentic Viking Banquet at Hafnarfjordur, lair of the Viking marauders. Hotel Loftleidir

This morning is free.  You might like to visit the Kringlan Shopping Mall located in the city center or see what’s available in the downtown area.

This afternoon we travel to the Blue Lagoon for a unique experience true only to Iceland (be sure to bring your bathing suit). The Blue Lagoon is a pool of pure, geothermal, mineral rich sea water in the middle of a lava field.  It’s part of the geothermal system that heats Reykjavik and has special properties that heal many skin disorders. After a comfortable soak there, you’re off to restaurant and Viking lair Fjorukraine in Hafnarfjordur for an rollicking Viking banquet where you’ll be treated to traditional Icelandic cuisine by Viking waiters and waitresses and some boisterous entertainment.

Day 8.  (B) Return to New York

This morning is free. In the mid-afternoon we board our flight back to the USA, arriving there in the early evening.
