Program Goal
This legal study tour is planned to provide both formal instruction and meetings between American attorneys and judges and their colleagues in South Africa.  By comparing the legal systems and actual legal programs we plan to provide our registrants with relevant knowledge about the problems of functioning in cross cultural environments.

About CLE Approval
This activity is approved for California minimum continuing legal education credit by the State Bar of California in the amount of 5 hours and the Corporation For Professional Conferences, Inc. certifies that this activity conforms to the standards for approved education prescribed by the rules and regulations of the State Bar of California governing minimum continuing legal education.  We anticipate that the trip will qualify for at least 5.0 hours for Continuing Legal Credit for Pennsylvania, California and other states.

About Your Final Report
Shortly after the completion of your program you will receive a final report detailing all educationally related time during the study tour.  Your report can be used as a professional diary and to verify CLE credit as required.  Your final report is designed to conform to the California Bar Association’s M.C.L.E. requirements.

Your Itinerary

Your Itinerary
Day 1. (D,S) We depart JFK Airport, New York  for South Africa via South African Airways.

Flight information will be provided with your initial registration documents.  Flights to South Africa usually depart at 11:00 AM.  There is a full inflight meal service aloft.

Day 2. (B ) We arrive in Johannesburg  in the mid afternoon. Protea Balalaika Hotel

This afternoon we arrive in Johannesburg and are cleared through customs and takent to our hotel, the four star Protea Balalaika hotel, loctaed in exclusive Sandton.

About South Africa
There’s much to see in South Africa.  Watching the big five wild life: - elephnant, lion, rhino, leopard, buffalo,  exploring Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities and sightseeing along its unmatched cultural and wine routes (along with wine tastings) or watching whales do acrobatics in the ocean.

The price of your tour to South Africa is about the same as a good escorted tour to Europe. However, South Africa is a rare place to visit with more for you to see that you may never have the chance to see again. Your dollar goes far there. And South Africa has world-class amenities and hotels. So, in addition to great game viewing you will enjoy spectacular sightseeing with all of the comforts of  California.

Day 3. (B, D) Today we visit the Pretoria School of Law and meet with our colleagues  This evening socialize at a welcome dinner at the Moyo restaurant. Protea Balalaika Hotel

Today we attend to our professional agenda and visit the Pretoria School of Law for a meeting with our colleagues.  The afternnon is free. Tonight we dine, drink and socialize at the Moyo Restaurant.    

Day 4. (B, L)  This morning we sightsee in Johannesburg, followed by lunch.  This afternoon, we meet with our colleagues at a private law practice.  This evening is free.

Day 5. (B, D)  We travel to Kruger Park with driver and guide to Mpumalanga where we will take an afternoon game drive.  Kruger Gate Lodge

This morning we depart for Kruger Game Park.  We will have lunch when we arrive, followed by an afternoon open vehicle game drive.  Our headquarters at Kruger Park will be the four star Kruger Gate Lodge.

About Kruger Park
Kruger National Park was established in 1898, a national treasure and the crown jewel of the South African Parks Board,  It covers 21,000 sq km of lowveld, and is about the size of Wales. One of the best managed national parks in the world, it has the largest variety of animals of any game park in Africa, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and many varieties of antelope.  Because of strict enforcement of conservation laws, the wild game is still abundant there.  Kruger Park has 132 mammal species, 438 species of birds, 104 reptile species and over 2, 000 plant species.

About the four star Kruger Gate Lodge
Situated 100 meters from the Paul Kruger Gate, the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate is an ideal location to experience Kruger’s wildlife. One of the most memorable moments of your visit will be dining in the open air Lapa Restaurant under the African stars.   There are  bush drives in the private reserve and throughout Kruger National with open vehicle safaris and organized game trails.  A birdwatchers paradise, Kruger Gate offers opportunities to spot a variety of species at your doorstep.

All rooms feature extras such as television, mini-bar fridge, personal tea and coffee making facilities A buffet-style breakfast is served in the restaurant and ala carte lunch is served on the wooden deck. The Protea Hotel Kruger Gate's new pool deck bar overlooks the Sabi River, perfect for game viewing - You can sit back, relax, and absorb the amazing sounds of nature while sipping on a refreshing cocktail.

Day 6. (B, D) We take morning game drives. This afetrnoon is free. Kruger Gate Lodge

Today we begin with an early morning game drive.  This afternoon is free for CLE activities or lounging around the pool.

Day 7. (B, D) We continue our game drives. Kruger Gate Lodge

Today we have a full day in the bush on morning and afternoon game drives.

Day 8. (B, D) Today we visit a local court or magistrates office to learn more about the South African legal system in a rural setting.  This afternoon is free. Kruger Gate Lodge

We visit a local court or police detachment to learn more about the South African legal system where, sometimes, separate traditional courts administer African traditional law and custom; they are presided over by traditional leaders, often chiefs or respected elders. Or, perhaps a Lower court, presided over by a civil service magistrates with limited jurisdiction in civil and criminal cases

Day 9. (B, In flight meals) After breakfast we travel to Johannesburg and board our return flight to JFK Airport.

Day 10. We arrive back at JFK?Airport in the early morning.

CAPE TOWN EXTENSION

About Cape Town
Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, is often referred to as the Monte Carlo of Africa and has recieved many awards as the best city to visit in all of Africa.  It is the legislative capital of South Africa where the National Parliament and many government offices are located.  Cape Town is famous for its specacular scenery including the Cape Floral Kingdom, Table Mountain and Cape Point (known to Americans as the Cape of Good Hope) where you see the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

Most of South Africa’s great wines come from this region which include the nearby towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch where frequent wine tastings are a way of life.  The “Wine Route” as it’s known is a truly beautiful drive through green mountain country dotted with vineyards and estates with Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture.

Day 9. (B) After breakfast we travel to Johannesburg to board our flight to Cape Town.  Victoria Junction Hotel

After breakfast we travel to Johannesburg and board our flight to Cape Town, arriving there in the late afternoon.  On arrival we will be taken to the four star Victoria Junction Hotel.  Located on the on the fringe of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the hotel is designed for the cosmopolitan traveller, one of its kind in all of Africa,

Day 10. (B, L ) This morning we explore Cape Town and Table Mountain.  This afternoon we visit the Cape Peninsula  Victoria Junction Hotel

This morning we sightsee in Cape Town.  Among the sights we will see are Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Comany Gardens, the Malay area of the Bo-Kaap,  Cape Town Castle and Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

This afternoon we travel to the Cape Peninsula via Sea Point, Clifton and Llando to Houte Bay and continue over Chapman's Park to the Cape Point Nature Reserve and see the Cape of Good Hope where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. Along our way we  have lunch at Bertha’s Restaurant. 

Day 11. (B, L) We travel to the Winelands for a winetasting visiting the historic city of Stellenbosch and the Moyo Spier Estate. Victoria Junction Hotel

We depart Cape Town  for the Winelands, winetasting and visit to the historic city center of the oak-lined town of Stellenbosch.  Stellenbosch is the center of South Africa’s wine industry. We have lunch along our way and a wine tasting.

Day  12. (B)  Free day in Cape Town Victoria Junction Hotel

Today is free.  Perhaps you’ll visit Robben Island, a former political prison where South African President, Nelson Mandella was held for decades.  Those seeking adventure can cage dive with Great White Sharks in nearby Gansbaai.  (Naturally you will be in a protected area.)

Day 13. (B) We board our return flight to JFK?Airport, New York

Day 14.  We arrive back at JFK?Airport, New York in the early morning.
